I really like the fact that so much controversy surrounds Chris Rock hosting tonight\u2019s Academy Awards ceremony. \tWhile people gossip over whether the comedian respects the Oscars, the Brians have had the opportunity to sail under the radar.<\/p>\n
Yes, it\u2019s that time of year again when I give away awards for the best in film \u2026 that I saw the previous year.<\/p>\n
We have six films eligible, the same as the last two years. Voters \u2013 and there is a change there \u2013 had to choose from \u201cDodgeball,\u201d \u201cStarsky & Hutch,\u201d \u201cAnchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy,\u201d \u201cThe Aviator,\u201d \u201cOcean\u2019s Twelve,\u201d and \u201cHome on the Range,\u201d the first animated film nominated for a Brian.<\/p>\n
I changed the voting a little at the behest of a friend named, coincidentally, Brian. He didn\u2019t see why he should be disqualified from voting since, in the spirit of Jeff Spicoli, these are our awards.<\/p>\n
If you don\u2019t get that joke, go rent \u201cFast Times at Ridgemont High.\u201d<\/p>\n
Anyway, without any further ado, the 2005 Brians.<\/p>\n
Best Supporting Actor: <\/strong>Steve Carrell in \u201cAnchorman.\u201d A veteran of \u201cThe Daily Show,\u201d Carrell won a minor award last year for his performance in \u201cBruce Almighty. It\u2019s a big step from winning \u201cBest Nonsensical Performance\u201d to this award, but he deserves it. Brian \u2013 the other one, not me – was adamant about this one. Besides, his inane ramblings make much more sense than most TV reporters I see on the air.<\/p>\n Best Supporting Actress: <\/strong>Catherine Zeta-Jones, \u201cOcean\u2019s Twelve.\u201d Cause she\u2019s purty.<\/p>\n Best Actor: <\/strong>Will Farrell in \u201cAnchorman.\u201d Two years ago, I proclaimed that Adam Sandler was the best actor ever. Thank you for making me eat my words, Will Farrell. Ben Stiller had some fine performances and Vince Vaughn appeared in half of the nominees, but Farrell followed up his classic \u201cOld School\u201d performance with another winner.<\/p>\n Best Actress: <\/strong>Christine Taylor, \u201cDodgeball.\u201d If for no other reason, she has added \u201cI just threw up a little in my mouth,\u201d to the phraseology for me and several friends.<\/p>\n Best Film: <\/strong>\u201cDodgeball.\u201d I don\u2019t know why. I liked “Starsky & Hutch,” but it fell apart when they had the real actors come back in a very cheesy manner. \u201cAnchorman\u201d made me laugh, but the story lacked a little. \u201cDodgeball\u201d had it all. Sure, Stiller was over the top, but Vince Vaughn brought it all back together. He should be in every movie.<\/p>\n And now the minor awards:<\/p>\n Thing I Most Didin\u2019t Need to See: <\/strong>Leonardo DiCaprio\u2019s bare behind. Please. I had popcorn an hour ago. My wife thinks he should get a “Best Performance by a Backside” award, but she’s not named Brian so it doesn’t count.<\/p>\n Thing I Most Didn\u2019t Need to Hear: <\/strong>Double-entendre jokes from Roseanne in \u201cHome on the Range.\u201d I know you need to entertain the parents, but that crossed a line.<\/p>\n Best Cameo: <\/strong>Chuck Norris in \u201cDodgeball.\u201d The other Brian picked this one, and I have to concur.<\/p>\n That\u2019s about it. I know \u201cThe Aviator\u201d and \u201cOcean\u2019s Twelve\u201d got robbed, but Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Will Farrell are hard to beat.
