One of my favorite aspects of the Kindle is how I can discover new books and writers, especially with the occasional free book offers I can find. That’s how I managed to come across “The Ex-Boyfriend’s Handbook” by British author Matt Dunn. (The Kindle version is only $1.99 now so go for it.)

I’m a sucker for what they call “lad lit” – books about guys who obviously have a lot of growing up to do. You don’t see as many American examples of this so I gravitate toward successful British authors in this genre. Dunn did a wonderful job in this book taking us through Edwards’ transition after his long-time girlfriend leaves him.

Like many books and movies, the key to success resides in the quality of the secondary characters. His boorish friend Dan and randy boss Natasha add greatly to the story along with Sam, his female physical trainer and Wendy, the concerned bartender. Dunn did a great job keeping me guessing which of the last two Edward would choose in lieu of Jane when she returned. That possibility is telegraphed throughout, but the end result is still satisfying.

I really liked the set up of Edward having a goal date to complete his life change to try and win back Jane. That allowed for a sold structure and not just an awkward attempt to win her back. The process allowed for a deeper look into his motivations.
