What Happened to Maps?

Just about every time a new piece of technology hits the streets, I get a little excited. I know I can’t afford every little gadget, but I like knowing that they exist.

Well, not always. Sometimes I hear about some new little electronic device, and I wonder who thought real people might need the item.

Lately, I have started to think that about these GPS devices that are popping up in all kinds of cars.

I don’t find this kind of technology useless. I’m sure sales people who have to visit a lot of new locations and food delivery services find GPS units pretty handy.

But putting these things in the hands of your average person is contributing to making us dumber as a people.

Stick to What You Know

Daylight Savings Time started on a very bad weekend for us. We had an morning commitment on Sunday, which meant we had to get up earlier than usual the day after we lost an hour of sleep.

To try and help everyone get through the day, I suggested a trip for coffee and donuts after church.

As we sat at Dunkin’ Donuts enjoying our breakfast, I heard something very strange as someone else placed their order.

They ordered pizza. Or a flatbread sandwich. I don’t know which, but I had seen signs advertising both in the store. That had totally flummoxed me.

What is the world coming to when you go to a donut shop for pizza?

Getting Old Sucks

I like to think that I will never outgrow my immaturity. I only masquerade as an adult because it pays the bills. I try to spend as little time as possible as a grownup.

Working at a college has helped with that. Sure, the job requires pretending I have evolved beyond my teenage years, but I get plenty of opportunities to hang out with students and remember why my college years played such an important role in my life.

Unfortunately, one of those opportunities recently reminded me that I can only cheat the calendar for so long.
