Oh, (Big) Brother!

At this point of the summer, I usually find myself filled with opinions on the latest news from the CBS reality show “Big Brother.” This is only series in the genre which I watch, and I typically go in whole hog. Well, not completely because I don’t buy the live feeds, but I typically follow the blogs which recap the action which never shows up on TV.

I included a lot of qualifiers in that first paragraph because I just can’t get into the show this summer. This has nothing to do with my schedule. I have plenty of time. I just can’t stand what they have done to the show I used to love.

I expressed some of these concerns last year when they sprinkled the new cast with six veterans. They tried a different twist this year with four former houseguests living in the house to serve as “coaches, ” there only to counsel the players not to compete for the title. However, the low number of houseguests and the eviction of one person on the first night made it clear from the first episode that the “coaches” would eventually play the game. That happened a couple of weeks ago.

At least I think that’s when it happened. I only see sprinkles of news here and there because I have had it with recycling past competitors. Sure, that might help the ratings by capturing some people who have an affinity for a particular person. That’s why these reality shows have “All-Star” seasons. I suggested that last year when I pretty much bailed on the show in early September. I couldn’t even make it into August this year.

Some would say that the veterans make up for the lack of personality in the two most recent casts, but I don’t think people have a chance to really get comfortable in the house when the producers keep dropping in competitors who have reached iconic status in the Big Brother world. To see the reactions of some people, you would think real celebrities had moved into the house, not just people trading off their performance on a reality show.

Then they made it worse this season by adding the brother of Russell from “Survivor,” who I guess is a big deal, but I don’t watch “Survivor.” This was a huge secret that the contestants – who are mostly reality show savants – sniffed out on the first night. Then he didn’t get what he wanted, threw a fit and was kicked out (then arrested for suspicion of DUI a couple of days later). This is the kind of crap I don’t care about, which is why I have bailed.

Does this really matter in the scheme of things? No, but I do take my TV seriously and hate to see something I enjoy go down the tubes because of a lack of creativity. They need to do a better job casting and wean themselves off past competitors and go back to basics. If not, I might not even give it a try next summer.

  1. None of these three Bozo’s deserve to even be in the final 3. all three of them fotlead 95% of the game untill Matt & Brendon were gone then they knew they had to step up or go home. Haydon, Enzo & lane let Matt win the Veto’s & HOH comps while they just sat back and held to the brigade final four BS. When Matt was a threat his brigade buddies backdoored him. Lane could have taken Britney to final two like he wanted if he listend to ragan and Backdoored Hayden as Enzo would be no threat and easily removed and sent home. This Brigade loyalty cost Lane what he ultimatly wanted. Talk about no class Enzo is a jerk for telling Briney about the brigade with that bleep eating grin on his face. He was smiling even when she was upset and crying realizing she NEVER had a shot at winning. I believe Hayden & lane truely felt bad they hurt britney but Enzo was still smileing.
