Drew Carey, Game Show Host and Blowup Doll Magnate

CBS announced yesterday that loveable schlub Drew Carey would replace Bob Barker on “The Price is Right.” I thought Carey would be a great selection as soon as I heard his name bandied about. Anyone would be better than Rosie O’Donnell, but I think Drew will handle the show pretty well. Most people know Drew from his eponymous TV show in the late 90s or from “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” You can’t doubt his influence because he has really pushed the careers of Christa Miller (Scrubs), Diedrich Bader (Office Space and Napoleon Dynamite), Wayne Brady and Ryan Stiles to levels they probably never imagined.

But Drew Carey has played another important role that most people don’t know about. I bet a lot of The Price is Right viewers might not find the humor in the 100 blowup dolls he bought for a soccer game.

Carey is a huge Los Angeles Galaxy fan (even before they signed Beckham). The Galaxy share the Home Depot Center with fellow MLS team Chivas USA, which have a dance team called the ChivaGirls. Well, in true soccer tradition, Carey and the supporter’s club LA Riot Squad decided to show the Chivas Girls some love during a game a few years ago. I hate the Galaxy, but this was one of my favorite MLS moments ever.
